2009 Tournament Finals Day

May 24th, 2009

The clouds parted and the sun shone down on Davenport Tennis Clubs 2009 Open Singles and Handicap Doublesimg_3951 Finals Day. Starting off proceeding on Court One was Charlotte Sykes taking on Maria Firth in the Ladies Open Singles, the crowds were treated to some early signs of brilliance from both players but it was Charlotte who took the first set by 6 games to 2. In the Second set Maria fought hard but came up just short with Charlotte running away with the second set 6 games to love, to capture her Fourth Ladies Open Singles Crown.

Following the Ladies Singles on Court 3 was the Handicap Mixed Doubles, in which Bill Phythian and Laura Bowden took on First Time Finalists Andy Robinson and Lesley Pangburn. After a very close First Set, which Andy and Lesley took by 6 games to 4, Bill and Laura upped there game and took the Second Set by 6 games to 3, going into the Final set many thought that the momentum was with Bill and Laura, but Andy and Lesley played there way back into the match and took the Final Set by 6 games to 2 to capture there First Title.

After a high quality Ladies Singles Final it was time for the Gentlemen to take to Court 1, first time finalists Adam Tomlinson and Paul Meredith, played some excellent tennis to wow the crowds, but it was Paul who put his early nerves behind him and ran away with the First Set winning it by 6 games to 1. The Second Set started off with Paul and Adam both playing some solid tennis but Paul’s hunger for his First Open Singles title was evident for all to see and he played his way to match point with an array of stunning forehands and after just 55 minutes on court Paul took the match and with it his First Gentlemen’s Singles Title winning by 2 sets to love, 6/1 6/2.

Following the Gentlemen’s Singles was the Men’s Handicap doubles First Time Finalists Tom Clarke and Jack img_3949Longden were up against the Two Times 2009 Tournament Finalist Bill Phythian and his partner the seasoned pro Rick Wilkinson. After a hotly contested first set which saw some top draw Mens Doubles, Tom and Jack clinched it by 7 games to 5. With there confidence building then ran out to a 5 love lead, only for Bill and Rick to claw there way back to 5/3 but the First Time Finalists were not to be denied there first title and after one of the best matches of the day Tom and Jack sealed the match, 7/5 6/3.

To round off an amazing day of tennis in glorious sunshine,  Rebecca Eagle and Sue Beales were up against Two Times 2009 Finalists Laura Bowden and Maria Firth, the match produced some high quality Ladies Doubles, but it was the Laura and Maria, who eventually came through to win in a close two set affair.
